Legal empowerment

Legal aid outreach in Kampala in June 2013.

We empower citizens in the area of land laws in the following ways:

Legal awareness: ULA staff particularly in land rights information centres conduct community awareness sessions to raise awareness on the legal framework governing the land sector. Awareness programs are also channeled through the mass media in local languages.

Alternative Dispute Resolution: Legal aid is conducted in the form of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and representation of the indigents in court. ADR is conducted by both the staff at the land rights centers and paralegals.

Court representation: ULA legal officers in land rights information centres conduct litigation for indigents when alternative dispute resolution fails. The challenge with litigation is the lengthy court process and case backlogs which cause delays in disposing of land cases.
